I was at Holy Grounds the other day in Indianola where I came across the no-calorie sweetener Truvia. One of the main ingredients in this sweetener is Erythritol. I was curious to know how this was a no-calorie sweetener, so I set out on a mission.
Erythritol is a sweetener that is found in other food products. Pears are one of the main sources of Erythritol. Other sources include: mushrooms, melons, grapes and mushrooms. Since these sources are common in the average diet, it is to no surprise that packaging it to consumers would result in consumption. People are always looking for a way to fill the need of sugar without the punch and Erythritol helps Truvia in doing so.
Erythritol, unlike other sweeteners, prevents teeth from rotting. The ingredients in this sugar alcohol actually aids in the prevention of cavities.
Another benefit to Erythritol is that it does not hurt insulin levels, which means the addition of this sugar alcohol to food or beverages will not cause blood sugar levels to spike resulting in hunger pains.
I am glad that I have found a close to no-calorie sweetener that I can add to my coffee without feeling guilty and thinking that I might have to add an extra mile to the tread of my tennis shoes.
